Antique Japanese bronze incense urn. Meiji period circa 1880. The lid is surmounted by an eagle killing a serpent. The ovular body of the urn is carved in high relief with aviary scenes to the cartouche to either side. The handles are adorned with birds among flowers. The urn is raised on a footed base with cherry blossoms, swallows and butterflies. Excellent original deep brown patina. Measures 21 inches high, 9 inches across at the center, and 6.5 inches across at the base. Excellent condition.
