Chinese screen with horse.This screen's design incorporates many traditional Japanese elements, but the artistic depiction of those elements was watered down, or "Westernized." Carved wood screens, generally, if inaccurately, referred to as Coromandel screens, were a Chinese innovation of a millenium ago. The Japanese incorporated the art form into their own distinctive culture. Tall screens were used as room dividers, while low screens were used during tea ceremony, when participants were seated on floor cushions
