English Classical fireplace grate or basket in the Adams taste, late 18th century, for use with either coal or wood. Pierced and engraved brass fender, engraved brass sides, and 4 brass lemon top finials. Elaborately cast iron fire back (for heat reflection) and square tapered iron legs. There is a very similar example in the collection in the Rhode Island School of Design's Museum of Art. There is an illegible maker's mark cast into both front legs. Measures 27.75 inches high at back and 17.75 inches wide at front, and 15 inches deep. The firebox is 8 x 12.75 inches. The cast iron fire back measures 21.75 x 13 inches. It weighs 73 lbs.
