English sterling silver and cut crystal double ink well. Hallmarked Birmingham 1918 HH for makers Hukin and Heath. Approximately 32 ounces of sterling silver; the platform base weighs 710 grams. Measures 12.5" W x 7.5" D x 4" H. Excellent condition with one glass inkwell insert missing. Marked 21407. Hukin and Heath was established in Brimingham, England, in 1855 and entered the Birmingham Assay Office in 1875. The firm was active at Imperial Works, Great Charles Street, Birmingham, and in the showrooms at 19 Charterhouse Street, London. J.T. Hukin retired in 1881, and in 1886 J.T. Heath continued the partnership with John Hartsghorne Middleton. In 1904 the business was converted into a limited liability company under the style Hukin & Heath Ltd. The firm went out of business in 1953. They did design work under the guidance of Christopher Dresser (born 7/4/1834 in Glasgow, died 11/24/1904 in Mulhouse). Dresser was a designer and design theorist, now widely known as one of the first and most important independent designers. He was a pivotal figure in the Aesthetic Movement, and a major contributor to the allied Anglo-Japanese or Modern English style; both originated in England and had long lasting international influence.
