Antique French turtle top boulle-work game box with mother of pearl counters or markers. Mid 19th century, lovely condition. Probably used to play Quadrille, a passtime enjoyed in French aristocratic salons. Andre-Charles Boulle, the most famous ebeniste in 17th century France, developed a complicated inlay process of cutting and engraving brass in elaborately scrolled designs and filling in the spaces with tortoiseshell, which was often tinted red. There are 127 long tabs, 59 short tabs, 28 discs, total 214 pieces.
