SOLD ITEM 8769 - Antique wrought iron heraldic roaring lion

There are 12 images of this item.

Antique Continental wrought iron heraldic roaring lion, probably 18th century. This is one of the finest architectural elements we have found in years. Purchased in a Paris antique shop during the 1970's, this medieval style double sided lion may have been a hanging sign for a tavern or an inn. The iron work is masterful. Hand forging iron of this heavy gauge to create a 2 dimensional sculptural form required the skill and artistic talent of a master blacksmith. There are two original heavy iron suspension brackets, affixed to the front (upper) legs. Measures 54 inches high, 43 inches wide, and 3 inches thick. The gauge of the iron measures 1/4 inch through the body and 1/8 inch through the details; weight is 80 lbs. Traces of the original paint on both sides. Excellent condition, unsigned. For other examples of this type of ironwork, please see Decorative Antique Ironwork, Dover Publications, 1968, by Henry Rene D'Allemagne.
