Willem De Kooning Paris Review printers copy print c1979. Signed lower right printers copy lower left. Measures: sight line 29 x 23 inches, frame 35 by 29 inches. Willem de Kooning (April 24, 1904 March 19, 1997) was an American abstract expressionist artist who was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. In the post-World War II era, de Kooning painted in a style that came to be referred to as Abstract expressionism or Action painting, and was part of a group of artists that came to be known as the New York School. Other painters in this group included Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Arshile Gorky, Mark Rothko, Hans Hofmann, Adolph Gottlieb, Robert Motherwell, Philip Guston and Clyfford Still. The Paris Review each year asked a well known favorite artist to make a print. They were not numbered editions. I am not exactly sure why this one says "Printers Copy" but most probably because, either this is the one they used to compare colors to the ones that were being printed, or it was one they retained for their files, or perhaps one they gave to a favorite client.. They must have asked him to sign it because a number of these were not signed. The company that printed this I believe was New England Lithography.
