Antique Victorian 18K green chrysoberyl cat's eye and old mine diamonds mourning brooch circa 1840. Provenance: NYC debutante, wife of a Pittsburgh steel tycoon (Edward L. Parker). This very rare brooch is an exceptional piece of Etruscan Revival period jewelry. It is 18K yellow gold with square and round beads and granulated scrolls and loops around the outer edge, and on top of the lower frame, it is crowned with an oval shaped, high dome green cat's eye cabochon oval stone, prong set in the center (14mm X 9mm; 6.5-7 carats, surrounded by 18 round, old mine cut diamonds (EXTREMELY clear, most likely from the old India diamond mines, to quote gemologist Paul Indorf of Chester, CT), each measuring 2mm across or .03 carats each for a total diamond carat weight of of 0.54. The diamonds are all prong set in a fancy, raised setting. The brooch measures 1.75" inches tall X 1 3/8" inches wide. It weighs 18 grams or 11.574 dwt (pennyweights). The back is capped with a thick, beveled glass, oval in shape insert, measuring 1.25" X 7/8" of an inch. This is where the back insert was removed and locks of hair or other keepsake(s) were placed in memory of a loved one.
