SOLD ITEM 8848 - Italian carved wood Renaissance putto or cherub 16th century

There are 12 images of this item.

Italian baroque carved wood putto, early to mid 16th century. Putti, in the ancient classical world of art, were winged infants that were believed to influence human lives. In Renaissance art, the form of the putto was derived in various ways including the Greek, Eros, or Roman, Amor/Cupid, the god of love and companion of Aphrodite or Venus; the Roman, genius, a type of guardian spirit; or sometimes the Greek, daemon, a type of messenger spirit, being halfway between the realms of the human and the divine. This putto is all original with traces of original pigments and gold leaf. There is one finger missing and tips to some of its other fingers and toes, along with chips here and there, which is to be expected from a sculpture this old. The presence of the original hand carved wooden pin indicates that the putto was mounted onto a bed or chair frame, or an architectural surround. Measures 14 inches high.
