Conger Metcalf (American, 1914-1998), studied at Stone City Art Colony with Grant Wood, at Coe College with Marvin Cone (where he received an Honorary Doctorate in 1964), and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston with Alexandre Iacovleff and Karl Zerbe. He received the Tiffany Foundation Prize to study in NY, and was a Museum of Fine Arts Paige Traveling Scholar. In his late 20s, he traveled to Italy and Paris and studied the Old Masters. He was admitted to the Copley Society in 1954. He is represented at the Boston Atheneum; the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA; Cedar Rapids Art Center in MI, and Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA.This beautiful 3/4 profile of a pensive mime is a superb example of this artist's work. Pencil, watercolor, and gouche on paper. It is matted in beige silk and mounted under glass in a handsome gold leafed wood frame. The paper dust cover bears the original labels from Gump Galleries in San Francisco and from the Margaret Brown Gallery at 280 Dartmouth Street in Boston. The image is 9.5" x 13", and the frame is 18.75" x 23" x 1.75".
