SOLD ITEM 4448 - English high back comb back Windsor settee

There are 5 images of this item.

English high-back comb-back Windsor settee. It could possibly be American, but it is an English style. We can tell by the stretchers and the seat that it is probably about 75 years old. The original of this form was made in England about 1740, and was usually done of ash, elm and beech. The elm seat would have had two anatomically scooped-out contours to accommodate two sitters. The reason Windsor chairs are so comfortable is the distinctive "saddle" seat. But as time went on, chairmakers began to eliminate the laborious process of contouring the seats to save production costs. Bench dimensions are: 43 inches W x 26 inches D x 31 inches H
