American Victorian Walnut Armoire, circa 1880. The armoire was made of walnut, with burr-walnut book-matched veneers. The design shows the influence of the 19th century English architect and writer, Charles Eastlake. His idea was to simplify the home by eliminating the heavy carving and draperies of the Victorian era, thereby encouraging air, light, and hygeine. As his reform ideas took hold in the US, his favored furniture designs included straight incised lines, flat panels, and low-relief carving, or no carving at all, As his reform ideas took hold in the US, this type of furniture came to be called Eastlake furniture. Most Eastlake furniture was manufactured in the northeast, and was most popular in that region and in the midwest.
