American sofa of the late Empire period.. It was made around 1865. The Empire period spanned roughly 1840 to 1870. Furniture of this period is heavy and strong with flaring curved arms. The wood is almost always mahogany accented with "flame" mahogany veneers. The earlier Empire pieces featured straight molded wood frames, as opposed to the curved frame on this sofa. Duncan Phyfe's designs also featured flaring arms, but they were thinner and more delicate
