Bristol glass pair of 13 and one half inch vases. They were made circa 1880-1900. They are Bristol glass, a generic term for a type of flint (leaded) glass that originated in Bristol, England. Bristol became an important center for glassmaking during the reign of James I. The earliest Bristol glass was a deep cobalt blue, and it is still being blown today. Various colors and hand-painted designs were introduced during the 19th century. This thin, milky-opaque glass is also produced in other countries. Later pieces are sometimes marked, more often not.
