Sleeping cat byTsugoharu Foujita, aka Leonard Foujita, was born in Tokyo in 1886. He moved to Paris in 1913. Later on, he lived briefly in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, and Cuba, then returned to Tokyo during World War II. After the war, he returned to France for good, becoming a citizen in 1955. A true eccentric, he married 3 times. His friends included the artists Matisse, Modigliani, Leger, Braque, Picasso, and Rousseau, all of whom subtly influenced his distinct style. Foujita bridged the gap between Eastern and Western art with his quiet, dreamy style, executed in flowing lines and thin smooth layers of soft colors. He was celebrated in his day, receiving many medals and awards. He died of cancer in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1968
