Brass with Silver Inlaid box. Turkish tea chest, or casket, dating to the second half of the 19th century. The powdery caked-on substance is either dried-up silver polish or oxidation. It should be cleaned. The calligraphic writing on the bottom is probably either nashki or nasta'liq. The copper handle was probably a replacement. Islamic artisans are known for their intricate metalwork. Tea containers were a fairly universal form, spreading from Asia to Europe. The side compartments each held a different tea leaf; the larger center compartment probably held a bowl to facilitate mixing when a blend was desired. The containers were usually lined with parchment, which tended to wear off over the years
