Sterling silver belt buckle made by William B. Kerr & Company, Newark, NJ. Established as Kerr & Thiery in 1855. Measures 3.75 inches wide by 1.75 inches high and weighs 34.5 grams. Kerr's hallmark was a fasces, which is a single-bit axe with rods bound in straps. The company used this trademark of ancient Roman origin from 1855 until 1892. Other hallmarks include a hammer, and three "X" marks. The company was purchased by the Gorham Corporation in 1906. Measures 3 3/4 inches wide by 1 3/4 inches high. Weighs 34.5 grams of sterling silver.
